Android 3.2 on the way: Welcome SD Card Slot!

0

I’ve seen reference in several articles that Android 3.2 is on the way.  Apparently the wifi only models will be receiving the update first, so it may still be several weeks.

I’ve went ahead and ordered a 64gb micro SD card in preperation and will eventually buy a second one.  I really can’t wait until we have essentially unloaded storage!  I may use one for the majority of my music and put video on a second card.

Flash is coming 3/18

0

I knew in advance that Flash would not be on the Xoom right out of the box.  It surprised me to find that a pre-flash update was being rolled out starting Friday, March 11.  (Link to a Yahoo News article.)

What surprised me even more?  I got the update notification on Saturday morning!

Now, it’s been revealed that Flash is actually being released on Friday, March 18th.  (Link to PC Magazine article.) This is awesome news! I found the Official Adobe Blog Post that announces it and it was sent out on Motorola’s Twiiter account on March 11th.

Flash will give some leverage over the iPad 2, however, the issue with Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) bugs may allow Apple to inflate the problems into a marketing nightmare.  Only time will tell.

I also have to wonder if Motorola thought ‘Why ask, when you can ask for forgiveness’ would work.  Either way, and as much as I do love my Xoom already, I think Motorola rushed the Xoom into the market simply to try and beat the iPad 2 release date.  That was a mistake, because there is no way Motorola could ever beat Apple.  Period.

Please note: Even with the criticism…I still love my Xoom and would never trade it for an iPad 2.

A Few More Apps

0

I’m continuing to bring my Xoom experience up to par with the variety of apps on my existing iPhone 3GS

A word on apps:   As I’ve mentioned, not all Phone apps work nicely on the Xoom.  I found a forum thread with a list of apps people have running under Honeycomb (Android v.3.0.)

I’ve grabbed a few more free apps and purchased several others…

Widgetsoid (free): A widget that gives you easier control over Bluetooth, Volume, Wifi, Brightness, Battery Life

Trillian ($4.99): I have been a very long time Trillian Instant Messenger user- multiple IM networks, multiple devices & OSes: Windows, Mac, IOS, & Android.

Beautiful Widgets (1.99 Euro): Weather app that hooks into AccuWeather…tons of nice skins, awesome weather icons and animations

Dolphine Browser HD (free): Another web browser, superior to the OS browser. I’m still looking forward to Firefox though.

Xmarks Premium (free app, but pay service): I’ve been using Xmarks since before it went pay, but it’s very worth the yearly subscription to sync my bookmarks across 3 desktop work PCs, my laptop, home desktop, iPhone, and the Xoom.

Angry Birds (Free): Yes, I gave in and downloaded both the regular and Seasons.  Wow, it looks really good on a 10.1″ screen.

CNN (free): Pretty cool to have streaming archived and live video feeds plus news galore.

Pulse (free): A very nice RSS news reader.   It now allows hooks into Google Reader, which is my primary news reader via Safari on the iPhone.   Read articles are marked read on my Google account, so I get the same view on the iPhone.

Google Sky (free): Very cool view of the night sky.

Astro (free): You really need a file viewer. It lets you browse the storage area of an Android device.

Navigation (free):  Google voice based GPS app.  I only just discovered this. We’ll try it out this afternoon in the car, although Steven already has it on his Droid X.

System Panel ($2.99): Manage your resources and apps, memory, utilization, kill running services/apps, etc.

Winamp (free):  What can I say…WinAmp has been around since the dawn of time, or see it seems.  It really whips the lama’s ass!  I’ve got my 70′s playlist pumping out now, while Airsync corrects a sync problem yesterday.

HeyTell (free):  Walkie-Talkie like voice messaging, cross platform with Android and IOS.

AK NotePad (free): I needed a note taking app and Steven has this on his Droid X

Matrix II Reloaded (free): What can I say, I wanted to see what Matrix streaming ‘code’ looked like on the Xoom!

Amazon MP3 (free): This should be the easiest way to buy music, but I haven’t tested it yet.

Kindle for Android (free): I only own Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol and I read that on my iPhone,

Why I Xoom

0

I originally wrote this post on Thursday night right after I finished installing Word Press and it started out with this statement:  I don’t own a Xoom….yet!

That changed late this afternoon, because I found enough evidence to support my purchase.  That’s not to say that everything comes up roses.  Like all products, there are pros and cons, but I will expound upon those over time as I use my new gadget.

I was initially drawn to the iPad 2 on the day of the Apple Event.  It looked really slick, but then I ran across an article that [somewhat] jokingly referred to it as the iPad 1.5.  It was around this point that I began to talk myself down from it.  The processor was not going to be a dual core A5.  It’s a dual core A4. Correction: The iPad 2 does have a dual core A5 processors. They decided to leave out some of the anticipated functions and, in my opinion, they are holding them for the iPad 3, which may or may not be released in late 2011.

What do I really want? I want fewer restrictions.  I want to buy music from Amazon.com without having to manually import said music into iTunes, then sync it to my iPhone 3GS, and many other things. Now, that’s not saying that I will cease using my iPhone 3GS.

Yes, I have an iPhone 3GS- and the contract end in July 2010.

Why do I bring up my iPhone 3GS?  It’s tangentially related.  The functionality of the IOS restrictions can be compared to the [more- note that I did not say completely!] open Android OS: What’s similar, what’s  different, what works and what broken.

Honeycomb for the Xoom is optimized for tablets.  That alone is a detractor.

I’ve seen some good apps on my partner’s Droid X, but as I’ve come to find, not all of the phone apps play nicely on the Xoom optimized Honeycomb.

I’ve also must still find equivalents to the IOS apps that I have come to love.  That means that as I find and test apps, I will be posting information and links to them,

I also plan to dabble in Android development at some point too.

So, here begins my journey of Xooming About.
