About Me

Hi!

You’re probably wondering who I am and why I bought the domain and why I created this blog.

I have worked in the IT support field for about 18 years in the realm of higher education.  I support a number of different departments across the University of Georgia.  Those departments have varied over the years, but the work remains about the same.  I maintain a variety of servers: Windows, Novell (Netware & SLES), Mac, and Linux.  I also wrangle workstations of all flavors and the networks they are attached to.

I grew up in the 80′s, starting with an Atari 2600 and a Commodore Vic-20.  I graduated through the Commodore products until landing on a x86 PC during high school and now happily crunch along with dual core processors on a Dell Studio 15, desktop PC and now….my Motorola Xoom!

I purchased my first Apple product in July 2009: the iPhone 3GS.  I have been extremely happy with it, but little by little I wanted more control over something that I had paid money for.  Apple exerts its power like the gravity well of a black hole. There’s no escaping it!  Please note that I am not saying that I hate Apple.  You’ll see evidence of that shortly.

My partner, Steven, upgraded his non-smart phone to a Droid X late last year.

So, I’ve been led toward the Android OS a little at a time, until I began thinking about upgrading to a device when my AT&T contract ends in July 2011. The iPhone 5 comes out around July 2011 timeframe.  I may very well stay with Apple, but might put off the purchase for a while.

Back to the story.

The iPad 2 started coming and it dazzled me. Little stars glittered in my eyes.

Then the Xoom commercials were plastered across television   I ignored them at first, then started doing research.

I was going to wait. Then I bought the XoomingAbout.com domain name.  I still don’t know why I did that.

Two days later I had a Xoom.  I outright bought it with no contract.  Yes, I paid extra, but I don’t want to be tied down for two years.  Will I ever drop the 3G service?  I can’t answer that yet.   Ask me again in a few months. Am I annoyed that I’ll have to ship it back to Motorola for them to install the 4G card?  Hell, yes! :)   But, I knew that before I bought it.

I have never been considered an early adopter of anything.   I place stability and reliability over the cutting edge (or as we say in the IT field, the bleeding edge) in both my personal and professional life. After all, the iPhone was out a year or two before I bought mine.

But with the Xoom…I knew I wanted it and I knew why I wanted it and what I would do with it.

And if you’re even the slightest bit curious, you can come Xooming About with me.
